Obituary for Dean H. Grothe

Dean H.  Grothe
On February 18, 2017, Dean H. Grothe, 94, passed away at SpiriTrust Lutheran in York. He was the husband of the late Fay L. (Pfeiffer) Grothe.

A public viewing will be from 10 a.m. until a funeral service begins at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, February 22 at J.J. Hartenstein Mortuary, 24 N. Second St., New Freedom. Interment will follow in Susquehanna Memorial Gardens, York. Pastor Osmany Espinosa will officiate.

Dean was born on January 30, 1923 in York to the late William H. and Minnie H. (Schnetzka) Grothe. He was employed for Cochrane Brass Foundry, Inc. in York for twenty years, then worked for Black and Decker in Hampstead, MD for eighteen years before retiring in 1983. He was a member of St. Johns United Methodist Church, Hampstead, MD and Trinity United Methodist Church, New Freedom. In his spare time, Dean took care of St. Paul's United Methodist Cemetery in Manchester, MD cutting the grass, hedges and other duties. In his younger years, he enjoyed playing softball, hunting, gardening and playing Pinochle on Sundays with his brothers.

He is survived by his children, Judy M. Duerr and husband, Richard Lee, Ruth L. Myers and husband, Howard and Dean W. Grothe; four grandchildren, Sheri Davis, Melissa King, Elaine Miller and Howard Myers; ten great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. Dean was preceded in death by his wife; parents; and four brothers.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory are recommended to Hospice and Community Care-York, 224 St. Charles Way, Suite 200, York, PA 17402.
